Vat Dyes are one of the most important class of synthetic organic dyes. The are insoluble in water, they can be converted in lueco form by reduction. Vat dyes are extensively and most significant dyes for cotton and cellulosic fibers dyeing and printing as they exhibit excellent fastness including perspiration, light, washing, chlorine, and rubbing fastness. Vat dyes are chemically complex dyes, insoluble in water, and need to be reduced to leuco form in sodium hydrosulphite alkaline solution before applying it to cotton/rayon fibers.
Vat dyes are extensively used for colouring cellulosic fiber especially cotton fiber. Vat dyes are widely used for running the dyeing process of cotton yarns used for producing jeans or denim products.
